Challenges
As with many commercial projects, time was a limited resource. Atlantic Tile & Marble were on a tight schedule that was reliant on contributing resources and trades. They had 120 apartment units to contend with, and no two showers were alike. Showers ranged in shapes and sizes. Some drains were off by a couple of inches. Uneven walls were not tile-ready. Clearly, a one-size-fits-all solution was out of the question.
Solution
Because Ken and Steven want to avoid any call-backs with issues that can arise, they opted for the Schluter®-Shower System—a family of integrated products that work together seamlessly, providing a fully-bonded, waterproof, and vapor-tight shower assembly.
The simplicity and lightweight nature of the system allowed Ken and Steven to effortlessly transport shower trays from unit to unit, saving them both time and physical effort. Each shower tray was customized per the designated size directly on site: some trays were trimmed to fit the dimensions of the base; others were adjusted to accommodate drain placement. Dry-pack mortar was used to extend the length of the trays, when needed. And because Schluter shower trays are pre- sloped, inherently waterproof, and ready for tile, there was no need to wait for the curing or drying time that is typically associated with mortar bed installations.
KERDI-BOARD was used to pack out the existing, uneven walls. KERDI-BOARD is a versatile waterproof building panel that gives users more control over their tile projects, offering a simple and convenient way to create ideal tile substrates. Rigid in structure, KERDI- BOARD is also impact-resistant, lightweight, and easy to handle. Plus, once KERDI-BOARD is tiled and grouted, the assembly becomes even stronger.
Resultado
Usando el sistema de duchas Schluter® se lograron instalar a tiempo y sin interrupciones, la impermeabilización con KERDI y KERDI-BOARD en las paredes, los paneles de ducha de 38” x 60” (97 x 152 cm) los rebordes KERDI-BOARD-SC y demás elementos de impermeabilización en los 120 baños del complejo habitacional conocido como Lofts Laros. También se utilizaron los perfiles SCHIENE en todos los cantos expuestos de las baldosas en las duchas y en los salpicaderos de las cocinas. El edificio histórico ahora cuenta con duchas que incorporan una innovadora tecnología de impermeabilización que garantiza que la instalación dure toda la vida.
