The Royal Hotel, located in Picton, Ontario, is a historical landmark that has been thoughtfully revitalized to merge heritage architecture with modern design. Owned by Greg and Kate Sorbara, the hotel embodies a blend of classic charm and contemporary luxury, making it a sought-after destination in Prince Edward County. The architectural design by Giannone Petricone Associates is rooted in a style known as "sprezzatura," which combines laid-back elegance with intricate details. The renovation project spanned multiple areas of the hotel, including guest suites, restaurants, treatment rooms, and public spaces, creating a unique experience for guests.

Objective

The objective of the Royal Hotel renovation was to preserve its historical significance while introducing modern amenities and design elements that align with contemporary hospitality standards. The project aimed to create an inviting space that reflects the heritage of Prince Edward County while offering luxurious accommodations and unique architectural features. Schluter Systems’ products were used throughout the renovation to ensure long-lasting, reliable tile installations in key areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and lobbies.

Challenge

One of the key design challenges was the installation of a 9-square-foot mosaic tile pattern that needed to extend seamlessly from the ceiling down the walls and across the floors without breaking the pattern. This complex design required precise alignment and meticulous attention to detail. Additionally, the scope of the project included various spaces with different tile needs, such as waterproofing in showers and durable surfaces for high-traffic areas. Despite these challenges, the project team ensured that the final results met both aesthetic and functional requirements.

Solution

The Royal Hotel's renovation team relied on Schluter-Systems to ensure that their tile installations were both aesthetically pleasing and functionally robust. The use of KERDI waterproofing systems provided peace of mind for areas prone to moisture, such as guest bathrooms and spa treatment rooms. The DITRA membrane was essential in preventing tile cracks caused by movement in the subfloor, ensuring the longevity of the tile installations.

In the bathrooms and showers, the combination of KERDI, KERDI-BAND, and KERDI-DRAIN systems ensured that these wet areas were effectively protected against water intrusion. Schluter’s ALL-SET mortar was used to apply membranes and install tiles across various surfaces, providing a strong bond that would withstand daily wear and tear.

Result

The Royal Hotel now stands as a beautifully renovated historical landmark that seamlessly blends heritage elements with modern design. The use of Schluter products contributed to the success of the project by ensuring reliable and durable tile installations throughout the hotel’s 33 suites, restaurants, lobby, and basement facilities.
